Thinking about love...

“Let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and in truth”

Thinking about love…

On a recent visit to Haiti, I was blessed to witness, again, the love that Haitians show one another. We were there for the “Christmas for the Poor”, which was celebrated between Christmas and New Year’s Day. I remember thinking to myself that the designation of “poor” might be a difficult one to deal with in Haiti. As we all know, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Does God see Haiti as poor?

More than a day for the poor, it was truly a day for Haitians to lavish the love of God on all of Haiti. They worked all day and night to get ready for the day of service. They made sure everyone had a way into town and back home. They prepared a big feast to share. There were gifts to share. Everyone was lovingly offered a bath and new clothing. There were tears, prayers and laughter. There was no rushing. It was a time of love and blessing. It was easy to see Christ in the givers and the receivers. The givers soon became receivers and the receivers, givers.

Blessed are they who are poor in spirit…for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Today, as you walk to Haiti…as you walk through your neighborhood…imagine a world soaked in the goodness of God – notice the beauty all around. Imagine everyone working for the Kingdom. Slow down and take it all in. Don’t rush past God’s people. Give of yourself and receive the love of God.
